How can our agency encourage two-way conversations with the public to share ideas and expertise to improve our work? What specific tools and strategies should we use to encourage these public conversations?

Please establish a hotline to report alleged violations

If the Obama administration wants to encourage more effective two-way communications with the public, then it should establish a hotline where people can report allegations of violations of federal laws, including by federal employees. For example, I'm aware of a chronic pattern of trespass livestock grazing on BLM lands in apparent violation of the Endangered Species Act and Federal Land Policy and Management Act.... more »

BLM Advisory Board

I have attended a BLM Advisory Board Meeting in the past. It is time for the Advisory Board to have representation from wild horse experts and advocates as well as bona fide Humane representation. I was amazed at the meeting to find that many of the members of the Advisory Board showed an negative regard for the animals in question. It is also apparent that the Board does not respond to any concerned public comment,... more »

Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Committee

The process for choosing the members of this Advisory panel should be more transparent. There should be a process whereby the nominees could be voted on by the public. The current board has members on it that have been on it for over a decade. The board consists mostly of industry people from the states that have the largest amount of Public Land, which is like letting the fox guard the henhouse. The WH&B Advisory... more »

Open NPS to Facebook/Twitter

Many parks currently operate Facebook/Twitter sites because they are the BEST way to reach out and connect with our public in real time. We use them in emergencies to announce closures and updates to calendars and schedules and it is very effective. We post videos and photos in real time and connect much better with the public. We should be able to link out nps websites to twitter and facebook feeds to better connect... more »

Web-based NEPA

The DOI should create a uniform web-based system for managing NEPA processes across its public agencies. It should include: 1. DOCUMENTS: The system should house NEPA notices, documents, supporting analyses, and decisions in formats easily accessible by the public; 2. SEARCHING FUNCTION: The system should categorize each NEPA event by attribute, like administrative unit, date, species, state, land use, etc., to... more »

BLM Advisory Board Meetings

As a former Federal Employee with the National Health Service Corps I am very aware of the responsibilities and value of the Board to an Agency. Having attended a BLM Advisory Board Meeting I have these suggestions:We the public are guests with important information and observations to share with this Board of Advisors to the Agency,(1) please allow us at least 5 to 10 min. speaking time(2) Provide a table and chair and... more »

DOI should establish a searchable volunteer project database

I believe that Interior Department agencies currently have a variety of established or ad hoc ways of identifying opportunities for volunteers to assist on projects. This approach may be confusing, inconsistent, or frustrating. For example, one BLM office may have different ways to identify Boy Scout, school, public lands day, NGO, and other volunteer projects. Instead, I recommend that one web database be established... more »

Posts to This Website

First, I'd like to thank the DOI for creating this wesite. It provides a unique opportunity to present citizens' views directly to the agency. Solicit Public Nominations for "Treasured Landscapes"

The DOI should solicit public nominations for "treasured landscapes" discussed below by Spotts. They are the public's lands; let the public help inform which portions of its lands are most treasured. This need not replace more traditional executive branch designations, but it can help democratize and engage and invest the public in the discussion of public land protection.

Public Involvement with NEPA projects

The National Park Service has a web based NEPA public review tool/program called PEPC - Planning, Environment and Public Comment. This program is geared towards making all NPS NEPA Environmental Assessments (EA), and Environmental Impact Statements (EIS) available for public review and comment. All NPS units use PEPC as the tool to make plans and impact analyses available for public review and the public can then comment... more »

Humane observers to be allowed to keep count of animals

I suggest that human observers should be allowed on a daily basis during round ups of wild horses I suggest that human observers should be allowed to view round ups at a safe distance but close enough to see if the contractor is respecting the law. I suggest that human observers should be allowed into holding facilities and should be able to share their observations freely. I suggest that human observers should be allowed... more »

BLM roundups & holding - perhaps a separate board is needed.

Currently the BLM Advisory Board for the Wild Horse and Burro program is for the board to report to the BLM. As has already been indicated in other ideas I will not repeat the inadequacies and suggestions for improvement for those meetings. In addition to those suggestions, perhaps one solution is for a separate balanced board of concerned parties, independent from BLM, for the welfare of the horses and burros and... more »

Protection of Independent Thinking

As someone who has worked frequently with USFWS personnel on endangered species issues, I have found that scientists that go against the accepted party line are often attacked by their superiors, particularly at the state supervisor and regional director levels. This has created an atmosphere of fear and intimidation-- and as a result many of the good scientists have left the USFWS to take jobs elsewhere. I have seen... more »

Department of the Interior History Initiative

The DOI should initiate a campaign to educate the public about the history of the Department. How the public lands came to be. What were the main issues at various points in history. The history of how the nation's natural resources have been used. The history regarding public lands and the various states entry into the Union. Reinforce the public memory so that we don't have to learn difficult lessons all over again.... more »
