Data Availability, Information Quality, Accountability...

What information and high-value data should we provide to make our agency more accountable, improve public knowledge of our work, and create economic opportunity? How can we make information and data available in a timely and accessible manner?

Health and Safety data

Every unit of DOI should have to post detailed health and safety records (minus privacy sensitive information). This information should be granular down to the office/building, trail, campground, river/lake, beach etc.. Data should present what happened, how it happened, why it happened, how often things happen and what was/is being done to fix it. The system should be centralized and include all federally owned/leased ...more »

Please end BLM's culture of secrecy

Despite a public mandate for meaningful change in the 2008 election, there remains a prevalent unwritten "culture of secrecy" in many Bureau of Land Management (BLM) offices. This culture grew strong and deep-rooted during the eight Bush years, and there is no sign that it has weakened in the past year. BLM employees are strongly discouraged from sending any E-mails or preparing anything else in writing that describes ...more »

BLM & USFS Wild Horse & Burro Program

I request that the BLM and USFS issue ongoing updates on gathered wild horses. There is no other way to gauge the full impact of gathers on the continuing health and welfare of the animals in the BLM pipeline. Currently, the BLM does not provide any information on horses and burros once a gather has been completed. These animals literally disappear from the public record except for their aggregate numbers and maintenance ...more »

DOI- BLM round-ups and all facilities need 24/7 live webcams

I want the BLM to run live webcams 24/7 at ALL round-ups and during all activities with the mustangs such as Vetting, sorting, loading/unloading trailers.

I want the helicoptors to have live cams on them aswell.

I want 24/7 live streaming webcams on all short and long-term holding facilities for mustangs.

The live cams will be on the BLM main website.

Accountability on Financial Systems: $100's millions with no end

I was involved with the previous financial management system implementation at Interior that resulted in sunk and operation and maintenance costs of several hundred million dollars over the life cycle of the system (without reducing normal operational costs, implementing a highly complex and inefficient system, adding bureaucracy, and resulting in minimal, if any, improvements to financial integrity, FACT!). Currently, ...more »

Please open Cobell E-mail data base to FOIA and other uses

Under the Cobell Indian Trust litigation over the past many years, I believe that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and perhaps other Interior agencies established a centralized database or repository where all E-mails are stored. This storage reportedly has cost many millions of public dollars to maintain over the years. However, I understand that some requests to search this database in connection with Freedom of ...more »

DOI should live webcast all meetings

The Department of Interior should live webcast all meetings for proposed rule making and regulations where the public comment should take place. They should make these meetings available for on demand viewing and have the ability to have that content be indexed for video search. By doing this the public and stakeholders will be able to see the inner workings of the rule making process and make the content and proceedings ...more »

BLM gather and holding numbers

Provide correct, complete and factual information about wild horse roundups and subsequent holding. For example the BLM posted daily gather reports of the Calico roundup - very much appreciated. However they changed the information, meaning, the early reports indicated good body condition, then one day that was gone from those early reports, but reports of a few in poor body condition were left in. Deaths caused ...more »

Another Idea for Monitoring Wild Horses

For the sake of transparency, and as an alternative to live, streaming video, I would like the BLM to install video cameras at capture sites, and temporary and long-term wild horse holding facilities. These could be the types of cameras that monitor stores to prevent shoplifting, and are used by law enforcement and many others. This same type of system could be used on the helicopters. I would much prefer live, streaming ...more »

Project Planning and The Flow of Money

It would help if there was a masterlist of all the DOI projects as they go into the NEPA process, with the closing dates for comments. This would give the public a good idea of what the DOI was doing outside the scope of its normal activities. It would also be very useful if there were a masterlist of all DOI bid solicitations, invitations to bid, etc., with a historical archive of what price the contracts were awarded. ...more »

Observers are needed at Fallon...still

Our humane observer tells us that Sat is the last public viewing day that will be allowed at Fallon. She will NOT be granted access while studs are gelded. She will not be granted further access to those 30 horses that were left without water after their roundup. I'd like the BLM (or those in charge) to wait on gelding. Why? Because there is a current lawsuit concerning the Calico roundup...If those horses get ...more »
