Managing the Land & the Mustangs

I suggest the BLM focus on other ways, besides mustang roundups, to manage the public lands, for the multi use purpose of the lands. Seeding the range and providing hay in true emergency equine situations would be much cheaper than the cost of roundups and feeding the 30,000+ horses that are in long term holding. Also, the number of horses being rounded up far exceed the number of available adoptors - due in part to... more »

Please open Cobell E-mail data base to FOIA and other uses

Under the Cobell Indian Trust litigation over the past many years, I believe that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and perhaps other Interior agencies established a centralized database or repository where all E-mails are stored. This storage reportedly has cost many millions of public dollars to maintain over the years. However, I understand that some requests to search this database in connection with Freedom of... more »

Please expedite e-Planning for NEPA to facilitate public input

I believe that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is building on the e-Planning software that has been successfully used for several BLM RMP planning processes to enable it to provide pending National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documents to the public for review and comment. BLM currently has a hodge podge of different methods of providing such NEPA review and comment notices to the public, not only among the state... more »

DOI should establish a searchable volunteer project database

I believe that Interior Department agencies currently have a variety of established or ad hoc ways of identifying opportunities for volunteers to assist on projects. This approach may be confusing, inconsistent, or frustrating. For example, one BLM office may have different ways to identify Boy Scout, school, public lands day, NGO, and other volunteer projects. Instead, I recommend that one web database be established... more »

BLM Advisory Board Meetings

As a former Federal Employee with the National Health Service Corps I am very aware of the responsibilities and value of the Board to an Agency. Having attended a BLM Advisory Board Meeting I have these suggestions:We the public are guests with important information and observations to share with this Board of Advisors to the Agency,(1) please allow us at least 5 to 10 min. speaking time(2) Provide a table and chair and... more »

DOI should live webcast all meetings

The Department of Interior should live webcast all meetings for proposed rule making and regulations where the public comment should take place. They should make these meetings available for on demand viewing and have the ability to have that content be indexed for video search. By doing this the public and stakeholders will be able to see the inner workings of the rule making process and make the content and proceedings... more »

BLM gather and holding numbers

Provide correct, complete and factual information about wild horse roundups and subsequent holding. For example the BLM posted daily gather reports of the Calico roundup - very much appreciated. However they changed the information, meaning, the early reports indicated good body condition, then one day that was gone from those early reports, but reports of a few in poor body condition were left in.

Deaths caused... more »

BLM roundups & holding - perhaps a separate board is needed.

Currently the BLM Advisory Board for the Wild Horse and Burro program is for the board to report to the BLM. As has already been indicated in other ideas I will not repeat the inadequacies and suggestions for improvement for those meetings.

In addition to those suggestions, perhaps one solution is for a separate balanced board of concerned parties, independent from BLM, for the welfare of the horses and burros and... more »

Another Idea for Monitoring Wild Horses

For the sake of transparency, and as an alternative to live, streaming video, I would like the BLM to install video cameras at capture sites, and temporary and long-term wild horse holding facilities. These could be the types of cameras that monitor stores to prevent shoplifting, and are used by law enforcement and many others. This same type of system could be used on the helicopters.

I would much prefer live, streaming... more »

OpenInterior v2.0: A Next Gen Opensource/OpenSocial Portal

A pilot project to build a next-gen Dept of Interior portal for the Federal Community Cloud. The idea is to build a suite of opensocial portals, one at each Federal Agency, based on The Open Stack that will enable communication with all opensocial partners.

Project Planning and The Flow of Money

It would help if there was a masterlist of all the DOI projects as they go into the NEPA process, with the closing dates for comments. This would give the public a good idea of what the DOI was doing outside the scope of its normal activities.

It would also be very useful if there were a masterlist of all DOI bid solicitations, invitations to bid, etc., with a historical archive of what price the contracts were awarded.... more »

Tell Us How to Improve this Site...

More Explanation of Why Ideas are Removed as "Off-topic"

I would like the Site Administrator to add a brief addition to each idea removed to "Off-topic Comments". Something like: "Incorrect Category", "Violates Terms of Participation", etc.

By carefully reading each "Off-topic" idea and the specific reason it was taken down, people should have a better understanding of the process. This would provide individuals the opportunity to re-post a good idea in a manner that does... more »

Working Together to Bring About Change

I would like increased collaboration and communication between the DOI and outside groups through inclusive, face-to-face roundtables and public "Town Halls". All recorded minutes and generated reports should be made available online. Live feeds and/or video capture and posting of special meetings and hearings would add transparency.

Each group has something to bring to the table. The DOI would speak to policies,... more »

Observers are needed at Fallon...still

Our humane observer tells us that Sat is the last public viewing day that will be allowed at Fallon. She will NOT be granted access while studs are gelded. She will not be granted further access to those 30 horses that were left without water after their roundup.

I'd like the BLM (or those in charge) to wait on gelding. Why? Because there is a current lawsuit concerning the Calico roundup...If those horses get... more »
